Footvolley Goes International. After decades of incubation inside Brazil, footvolley was ready to get introduced to the world. The first event of importance happened in 2003 at Miami Beach. The US Footvolley Association demonstrated the sport at that year’s Fitness Festival where it turned heads.
Footvolley is a sport which combines aspects of beach volleyball and association football. Footvolley was created by Octavio de Moraes in 1965 in Brazil. Footvolley combines field rules that are based on those of beach volleyball with ball-touch rules taken from association football. Essentially footvolley is beach volleyball except players are not allowed to use their hands and a football replaces the volleyball.
The first game of footvolley was played about 50 years ago at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (although not everybody agrees on this). They say footvolley was created by Octavio de Moraes in 1965. They played football on a beach volleyball court because they were not allowed to play football near the beach.
History has it that William G Morgan - who invented the game of volleyball in 1895 - came up with the idea so that people who found basketball’s ‘bumping’ or ‘jolting’ too strenuous could have an alternative physical activity to fall back on.
The sport of volleyball originated in the United States, and is now just beginning to achieve the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports.

1917: The game was changed from 21 to 15 points. 1920s: There are unconfirmed whispers of men’s teams playing on the beach in Hawaii, but most accounts place the sport’s origin in Santa Monica, California where the first Volleyball courts are put up on the beach at the Playground.
